The Heirloom Project

One of my favorite scripture passages tells of Jesus reading from the scroll of Isaiah and proclaiming that the scripture had been fulfilled in Him. A blue thread running along the scroll represents covenant.

It reminds me of “consider the lilies” because I have learned that God always keeps His promises—His covenants with us—and I will continue to do my part, as best I can, to keep my covenants with Him.

This is a story worth remembering and preserving as an heirloom.

After the Flood, the dove returned to Noah carrying an olive leaf—a sign that judgment had passed and life could begin again (Genesis 8:11). In a Christ-centered reading, it can beautifully suggest what Christ brings: peace with God, restoration, hope, and a new beginning.

When I recognize my weaknesses and my need for strength, hope, and healing, I know I can find them through the Savior’s Atonement.

When early Latter-day Saint pioneers in Utah faced hunger after crop failures, they learned to dig and eat the small bulbs of the native sego lily. In seasons of scarcity, this humble flower helped sustain families—becoming a lasting symbol of providence, endurance, and life preserved in the wilderness.

In my own family, we consider the lily integral to our family’s story of survival as well. It has become our symbol of connection to Lily and our hope of a future, joyful reunion.

I have a friend who lost her son in a car accident about three months before Lily passed away. Since his passing, their family has kept a candle lit in remembrance of him—a memorial that keeps his memory and spirit present in their home.

The flag is a visible reminder of freedoms that were hard won and are never meant to be taken for granted—the freedom to worship, to speak, to choose, and to live according to conscience.

It reminds us that liberty is both a gift we inherit and a responsibility we carry forward.
